Respect and Honor are some important Universal Values that every one should understand and observe.  These two values overlap each other and yet they can be slightly different values or qualities in different contexts. Respect can be defined or explained in the following terms:

  • Respect may be Recognizing

  • Respect may be Honoring

  • Respect may be Paying Tribute

  • Respect may be Valuing

  • Respect may be Having a Good Opinion

  • Respect may be Having some Esteem

  • Respect may be Having some Reverence

  • Respect may be Appreciating

  • Respect need not be Agreement

  • Respect may not be Acceptance

People, Beliefs, Philosophies, Things or Acts can be respected or honored in a variety of ways, depending upon the custom, culture, law, tradition, protocol etc.  The important thing is not to dishonor or disrespect anyone or anything.

2. WHAT OR WHO SHOULD BE RESPECTED?

  • People (Every Person no matter who they are and what they are)

  • Religion or Religious Beliefs

  • Philosophies

  • Culture and Art

  • Customs and Traditions

  • Law

  • Government

  • Leaders and those in Authority

3. WHY SHOULD WE RESPECT AND HONOR?

  • Because it is the Proper and Right thing to do

  • Because it is Moral and Ethical

  • Because it is our Social Obligation

  • Because it is the only way by which we can have Peace

  • Because it is Essential to Avoid Unnecessary Squabble, Argument, War, Conflict, Crimes etc.

  • Because it is necessary to Co-exist in any place

  • Because it is necessary to Encourage, Motivate and Inspire People

  • Because it is a Good Principle to follow

  • Because it is the Right Thing to do Socially, Culturally, Morally and Ethically

  • Because Disrespecting or Dishonoring will be irrational, unethical, anti-social, unlawful, immoral and even illegal

4. HOW SHOULD WE RESPECT AND HONOR?

  • By talking Politely and Courteously

  • By being Friendly and Nice

  • By making Proper Gestures and Customary Things, when it is expected in the society in a particular culture

  • By paying Tributes

  • By praising or making complements

  • By making Positive Comments

  • By Recognizing the Good Qualities and Deeds

  • By making Good Remarks

  • By Giving Things of Value

  • By using Proper and Good Language when we converse with other

  • By not making Derogatory Statements

  • By not Insulting anyone in any way

  • By not Being Rude

  • By not Offending

  • By not Slighting others

5. CONCLUSION

If we can somehow communicate the importance of Respect to the people in our society, our world will be like Heaven on Earth.  There will be Peace, Joy and Fulfillment !!!!
