St. John's Gospel - Chapter 10

1. THE PARABLE OF THE SHEEP AND THE SHEPHERD

Jesus said:

• He was the good shepherd: the good shepherd gives his life for the sheep

• He knows His sheep, and He was known to His sheep

• As the Father knows Him, He knew His Father

• He will lay down my life for His sheep

• His Father loved Him, because He was willing to ready to lay down His life, and that if He did, He could also take it back

• He said that no man can take His life from him, but I lay it down of Himself.  He had power to lay it down, and to take it again. 

• He that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep

• He goes before his sheep, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice

• There are other sheep, which are not of this fold: but I must bring them; and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. 

2. THE PARABLE OF THE DOOR

Jesus said:

• I am the door of the sheep

• I am the door: by me if any man enters in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture 

3. THE PARABLE OF THE THIEF

Jesus said:

• He that enters not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber

• All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them

• The thief comes not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. 

4. THE HIRELING

• But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, will leave the sheep, when he sees a wolf coming and flees.  The wolf will catch them, and scatter them

• The hireling flees, because he is an hireling, and cares nor for the sheep

5. THE FEAST AT JERUSALEM

• Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch, at Jerusalem, when there was a feast of the dedication

• Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, "How long will you make us to doubt?  If you are not Christ, tell us plainly

• Jesus answered them, "I told you, but you believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, and they bear witness of me". 

7. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION

In this chapter, Jesus makes it very clear that He is the Shepherd and the people are like the sheep.  If they will follow Him and His commandments, then they will be safe and well taken care of.  He will also protect them from all dangers.  Further, He added that he was able to do everything supernaturally, because He was the Son of God!
