THE BOOK OF DEUTERONOMY

"If thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, observe and to do, all His Commandments.... God will set thee on high above all nations of the Earth: and all these blessings shall come on the, and overtake thee..." (Deuteronomy 28:1-2)

I. THE MAIN THEMES IN THE BOOK OF DEUTERONOMY

1. The Transfer of Leadership from Moses to Joshua
2. The Covenant between God and Israel
3. The Great Commandments of God
4. The Blessings of God for those who obey Him
5. The Old Testament Feasts and Sacred Days
6. The Prophecies about the Future of the Jews

II. THE CONTENT OF THE BOOK OF DEUTERONOMY
1. The Reiteration of the Commandment of God: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God, with all thine Heart, with all thy Soul and with all thy might" (Deuteronomy 6:5).   This Commandment of God is emphasized as the greatest Commandment of all both in the Old Testament and in the New Testament.
2. God told Israelites to totally Destroy and Eliminate the Canaanites and all their Idols
3. God promised Great Blessings to those who obey His Commandments.  These Blessings are listed in Chapter 28 of the Book of Deuteronomy:
  • You will be blessed in the City... and in the Field
  • You will be blessed in all that you will set your hand and to
  • You will be made plenteous in Good
  • You will be the Head and not the Tail
  • You will be Above only and not Beneath
  • You will not Borrow but shall Lend to many Nations
  • You will be Blessed in the City and in the Fields
  • You will be Blessed when you go out and when you come in etc.,

4. Various Laws of God

  • Not to Eat Unclean Animals and Living Creatures
  • To Give Tithes
  • To Observe Sabbath Days and Sabbath Years
  • To Follow the Laws pertaining to Slavery
  • To Give First Fruits to the Lord

5. The Feasts of Israel

  • The Feast of Week
  • The Feast of Harvest
  • The Feast of the First Fruit
  • The Feast of Ingathering
  • The Feast of Trumpets
  • The Day of Atonement
  • The Pass Over
  • The Pentecost

6. The Prophecy about the Jews (That they will be Wandering, going through
    Persecutions, and Trembling all the Time)
7. The Transfer of Leadership from Moses to Joshua
8. Death of Moses

 
IV. CONCLUSION
In the Book of Deuteronomy the most significant things that we should note are listed below:
1. The Reiteration of the Greatest Commandment of God to love Him with all our Heart, all
    our Soul and all our Strength
2. The Love and the Faithfulness of God
3. The Laws of God pertaining to Unclean Animals, Tithes, Sabbath, Slavery and
    First Fruits
4. The Covenant of God to bless His Children as along as they keep His Commandments and
    observe His Laws
5. The Reassurance of God to bless His people who will obey Him
